Many people think of turkey, football, and festive fall decorations when they think of Thanksgiving. Usually celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving is not simply a day celebrating a historic meal between settlers of the New World and Native Americans. Thanksgiving actually has much older roots as it usually signifies the commemorating of a good harvest and blessings for the coming year.
Many of Thanksgiving’s actual roots come from the idea of a harvest festival – where food and other goods were celebrated and shared while being prepared for the long winter before crops could grow again. Before the traditional idea of Thanksgiving occurred, English Protestants created a Thanksgiving-like festival to coincide with the many Catholic feast days and celebrations. While many people reference the pilgrims and Native Americans gathering together to celebrate the success of the American colonies, this is only part of the story.
While the traditions of the original Thanksgiving may have changed in a few hundred years, what remains the same is the purpose of the gathering – to give thanks. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to give thanks to the senior veteran in your life, and the best way to do that is to include them in the family get-togethers. Make the effort to ensure they are comfortable, and if necessary, make arrangements ahead of time to have their caregiver attend with them. Don’t forget to include their caregiver in the meal as well, as they aren’t able to be with their families, and the help they provide your senior veteran deserves to be recognized on a day of thanks as well.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to give thanks for your senior loved one, for both the role they play in your family as well as for their service to their country. Take this time to show them how appreciative you are that you can celebrate the holidays with them by doing just that – making sure they are included in the family events.
