My father has been the strong one in our family since I can remember. I don’t ever recall him getting so much as a cold during the time when I was growing up and even after I headed off to college to start my life as an adult. So when my mother contacted me and wanted to talk about veteran’s home care, it was a bit of a surprise, to say the least.
Don’t get me wrong, my father has had his share of health problems in recent years, but I didn’t think that it was anything my mother couldn’t handle, or help with. I guess I wasn’t listening to the warning signs or her concerns with regard to his health and well-being, or to her own. I’m one of those people, though, that has a habit of delaying things and putting them off until they can no longer be delayed. However, I made a pact with my mother that my first and primary New Year’s resolution was going to be to make sure that my father receives the best veterans home care that he can get.
For the most part, my parents did well financially. This doesn’t mean that they are wealthy or even well off, but that they saved and invested wisely. My father has enough savings that he could get the best health care for at least a couple of decades, but that doesn’t mean we are willing to just toss all those years of hard work out the window so that he can remain at home. I believed that there should be something that the VA could do for my father, considering his service during the Vietnam War.
Even though this is a New Year’s resolution, that didn’t mean that I should delay looking into until then; I actually meant that I want my father to have the best care possible as soon as he can. That’s why we already contacted a few home care services companies that are trying to find the right person to work with my father in his home. In the meantime, I’m looking in the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit, which sounds like my father would qualify for.
Because of his active duty service and because he served during a time of conflict, he just might qualify. My mother would be eligible for some of the benefit as well if she needs care in the future. It feels good to make a resolution that I know I’m going to keep. My father deserves the best care possible. I believe he’ll get that with veteran’s home care.
