Jessica Elkins, of Arlington, Texas, was promoted to senior regional manager at Veterans Home Care of Texas. Veterans Home Care, is a national company based in St. Louis, Missouri with a regional office in Dallas and about two dozen employees throughout Texas to personally serve disabled, elderly veterans and their surviving spouses with access to in-home care.
Elkins recently graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and has been with the company for more than three years. “I never wake up and dread going to my job,” said Elkins.
“I meet a lot of sweetheart veteran couples. They have been married their whole life and they have cared for each other through countless illnesses. There comes a time where they need more help than they can give each other and that is where we come in,” said Elkins.
One such couple, Joe and Lee Gorbett, a World War II veteran and his wife who have been married 71 years and are still living on their own in Arlington, Texas with the assistance of their daughter and son-in-law and our VetAssist Program. They now receive the Aid and Attendance pension from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) which they use to pay for in-home care twice a week
Along with working with veteran families, Elkins works with many home care providers, home health professionals, social workers, and hospital discharge planners who rely on her expertise.
Veterans Home Care was founded in 2003 by Bonnie Laiderman after her mother, a surviving spouse of a Korean War veteran passed away before the approval process was complete for a little known Aid and Attendance pension through the VA. Laiderman decided to help make this pension available to as many deserving veterans as she could. Since then, her solo business has grown to more than 100 employees across the country and has served 13,000 disabled veterans and their surviving spouses in 44 states.
