Veteran’s Elderly Care – Support Local Veterans to Say ‘Thank You’ for their Service
Veterans served the United States and regardless of why they offer their service, they deserve a level of respect from the country and fellow citizens. As veterans age, many of them struggle with a lot of mental health issues, especially those who served during a time of combat.
There are many things that we, as friends, family, and even strangers, can do for veterans to not only provide home care for those who require it, but to also lift their spirits when they feel a little lost or frustrated. Below are five strategies that you can use that may be able to benefit a veteran that you know.
1. Spend some time with them.
Whether the veteran requires home care, lives in an assisted living community, or is in a nursing home, visiting with them and having a conversation on a regular basis can provide a bright point in their day.
You don’t have to spend all of your time with them, but just stopping in to say hello and share the conversation can be a great way to boost spirits.
2. Explore options for senior veterans to get various discounts.
There are usually many companies that offer veterans a discount on their services and cost of products. They may also offer discounts to seniors as well. Try to find out where the veteran you know can get special discounts, whether it is eating out at a restaurant, clothing, or any other item. This can make a big difference for a person who is in a limited fixed income.
3. Make contributions to veterans programs.
If you don’t know any veterans who require home care, you can still make a contribution in the form of money to the VFW or other organizations that support United States veterans.
4. Visit wounded service members.
While this article is about elderly veterans, visiting with wounded warriors can do a lot to lift their spirits. When you lift the spirits of a wounded warrior, you will also have an impact on veterans across the country. They will know that their service made a difference in your life in some way.
5. Deliver food to veterans in need.
Local food banks and other delivery services will be able to tell you what type of foods they may need, especially when they are providing meals to aging veterans. You can contact your local Area Agency on Aging to find out where you can make a real difference.
